How to clean out your closet - 6 items you need get rid of this year

clean your closet

Spring is about new beginnings and spring-cleaning. But if you are anything like me you have been procrastinating the last 5 years from cleaning out your over stuffed closet. When I finally got around to cleaning out my closet, I found clothes I didn't even remember buying and other things I haven't worn in more than 5 years.

I finally got up the nerve to rampage my closet and get rid of anything I didn't need. Before I began, I made sure I had a bottle of wine open and my favorite playlist ready to go. Plus, I had three big garage bags: one for consignment, another for donation to Goodwill and last but not least, one bag for trash.

Whatever is your reason for wanting to clean out your closet; here is a list of seven items that you definitely need to get rid of this year. And believe me, you will never miss these items.

Anything too big or too small

We love to hold on to our favorite clothes, whether we accidently shrunk that expensive sweater or those skinny jeans from when we were eighteen. Chances are we are never ever going to fit into them again, so it is time to let them go.

It might be hard to get rid of items that are sentimental or that we paid a lot of money on them, but you need to be realistic and ask yourself: Can I get this tailored? Can I sell it online as a consignment piece?

The same top but in different colors

Most of us grew up in a time period, where there weren't too many fashion options. So when we found a top or skirt that we loved, we'd buy three or four of the same style but in different colors.

Line each of the items up and ask yourself, which one do you wear more often. You will be surprised that only one of the colors you wear regularly and the others you avoid.

Worn out and poor fitting undergarments

For some strange reason we become intimately attached to our favorite bras and panties, even shapewear. Being held together by threads and we still can't bear to throw it away.

Make it habit to throw away all of your undergarments each year, except for that special lingerie you have for special occasions. Plus, bra sizes constantly are changing; go get a bra fitting and some new bras.

That outfit that has been sitting in the back of your closet for years

You saw, you tried it and loved it, so you bought it, but you have never actually worn it in public. Or maybe you used to wear it all the time, but you haven't worn it in eons.

Fashion changes and some pieces are just more versatile than others. Whatever the reason is, if you are not using it, then it is time to let it go. If it is in good condition, consider selling it online.

All of those useless freebies

We seem to collect all of these freebies, whether T-shirts with company logos or those hats and bags. Again, ask yourself, have you ever worn this more than once and if not, you need to toss it in the Goodwill bag. By doing this, you will be making space in your closet for items you actually will wear.

Any items you haven't worn in 6 months

Ok, I know this sounds painful but it doesn't apply to changing seasons. Like for example that beautiful silk pleated skirt you bought last year but still haven't worn. Chances are you are never ever going to wear it.
